Thor:Ragnarok

Creamsource Sky LED luminaires were used to light Thor: Ragnarok, the highly anticipated new movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization.

The production had a large component of sequences that required LED lighting, both practical and film lights. “We decided early in pre-production that this would be a mixture of Creamsource Sky and ARRI Sky panels,” said Javier Aguiressarobe, cinematographer. “We chose Creamsource Sky because of its colour rendition and its versatility. We used six colour LED strips for all our sets, and colour matched as closely as we could all of our fixtures and strips.”

Gaffer Reg Garside had used Outsight’s Creamsource Doppio units before, but it was his first time using the Skys. He said, “We had a lot of different conditions on this film – day, interior, exterior, greenscreen – but the Skys performed well for every eventuality. They are also totally weatherproof so we could use them outside in all sorts of conditions. They are robust, their design makes them very easy to rig, and as far as I know Sky has the best IP rating on the market. If I were to do large lighting exteriors again, then I would certainly be looking at the Creamsource Sky.”

Garside not only used them as conventional spacelights, but also in banks of 24 in a large softbox, and as double and quads in 8 x 8 and 8 x 4 boxes. The boxes were hung on bomax systems off the dolly beams in the stages, enabling the crew to move the boxes easily around the sets. They also built black skirts with silver reflectors on the inside to give more light when using them as spacelights.

Garside added, “The crew at Outsight were very accommodating and helpful in getting the equipment to us, and backing up during the production.”
